Deputy Director, Analytics

The Role

Help progressive organizations drive meaningful change. In this role, you’ll serve as a leader and people manager within the Analytics team - providing management, mentorship, training opportunities, and sharing your technical- and strategic-expertise across the agency as a whole. You’ll help lead a team of talented analysts who generate insights that drive decisions for a client base that spans leading charities, campaigns, advocacy organizations, and brands. Day-to-day responsibilities:

  • Collect and analyze data to serve the needs of your client portfolio, including but not limited to: web traffic and user behavior, email messaging statistics, paid media performance, and social media trends
  • Develop scalable industry best practices, and drive core insights from data to suggest, create, and execute multivariate or A/B tests that drive fundamental improvements.
  • Transform your analysis observations into insights and actionable strategic recommendations for fundraising and communications programs
  • Work collaboratively with a cross-disciplined team of creative directors, copywriters, designers, strategists, and account managers as a leader in your craft on client engagements
  • Plan measurement strategies for key performance indicators, develop and execute testing plans, and monitor existing properties to ensure all tracking and data collection works properly
  • Develop effective and persuasive presentations, dashboards, and memos demonstrating the value of our work for client teams, business development, and partners
  • Provide strategic leadership on analytics projects and act as the senior expert on analytics issues.
  • Assist with management and mentorship of junior team members (Web Analysts and Web Architects) located across offices. 
  • Conduct regular 1:1 meetings with designated team members to review individual and account performance. Work with direct reports to craft goals and professional development plans, provide regular feedback and guidance as issues arise, address training and onboarding needs, and conduct annual performance reviews.
  • Work with the Director to manage significant team process goals, including managing capacity, staffing and hiring, establishing team goals, and identifying product and project opportunities.
  • Promote and cultivate skill development and professional growth of members of the team.
  • Champion cross‐client and company-wide innovation as well as strategic, programmatic, and procedural improvements.
  • Develop materials and speak publicly on behalf of the company on webinars, at industry conferences, and at BSD-hosted events.

Once Blue State offices reopen, on-site presence is strongly preferred at a minimum of two days a week. To enter our US offices or attend Blue State events, staff and visitors must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including with a booster shot when eligible.  Exceptions for protected grounds will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.


  • 6+ years of experience in digital analytics with direct experience in mass marketing with fundraising, advocacy, or ecommerce. Experience working with CRM data, with a web analytics suite such as Google Analytics, A/B testing solutions such as Optimizely (or equivalent) preferred. Experience with digital paid media is a plus!
  • Strong people management skills. You are able to identify and solve issues, and escalate when appropriate. You resolve conflicts constructively. You proactively identify and communicate growth goals for yourself and others. You are an exceptional listener. 
  • You dabble (or more) in programming, with experience in SQL, Python, R, Javascript, or HTML. You have experience in data science and/or data visualization. In addition to data manipulation and processing, you’re familiar with quantitative/statistical methodologies, and more advanced libraries or packages for stats modeling and machine learning. ETL familiarity is a definite plus! 
  • You can take a step back to see the bigger implications of your analysis work and lead program strategy. Beyond data observations, you have client presentation experience crafting the data and insights story to arrive at a strategy.
  • Strong collaborator and relationship builder.
  • Excellent communication skills. Ability to interact with all levels of end users, and colleagues. 
  • Ability to adapt to new situations, solve problems on the fly, and communicate with those around you. Teamwork and scrappiness required.
